Smart Homes – experience the next step beyond smart metering

As the metering industry is currently developing across the value chain, from smart grids, to smart meters and now towards smart homes, it is essential for industry professionals to have a platform to discuss, debate the determine the roadmap for the entire energy industry, including the impact on the consumer themselves.

Smart Homes 2010 was therefore conceived to explore the world beyond the meter- addressing the convergence of telecoms, utilities, appliance manufacturers, data aggregators and solution providers looking to deploy intelligent smart home solutions which engage the customer to drive increased energy efficiency and a low carbon future.

Smart Homes 2010 proved to be the platform to discuss the role of smart home in driving ROI in deployed energy infrastructure, as well as indentifying new business cases and revenue streams in the near future.  For the 300 attendees the questions was not “IF” they need to step into this market, but “HOW” to step into it.

Core benefits of smart home deployment outlined in presentations included:

  • Reduce consumer demand for energy, especially during peak periods
  • Saving consumers estimated $470/year
  • Up to 31% lower energy consumption
  • Enable peak period pricing
  • Reduce consumption of natural energy resources, including coal and natural gas
  • Major reduction in CO2 emissions = as much as 585,000 cars worth of output annually

Key presentations included leading EU trials from: BeAware, BeyWatch, Energy@Home along with key utility perspectives from Austin Energy, the Pecan Street Project, ENEL, DONG, British Gas and EnBW

Over the 2 days, delegates got a clear strategic understanding of the core benefits of smart home deployment.  Much discussion at Smart Homes 2010 revolved around the ‘new energy players’. Fundamentally, this is a question of how the energy market will change with the emergence of increase ‘convergence’ and new players such as data aggregators, telecoms and solution providers begin to engage in the energy efficiency supply chain. In the end everybody agreed that a collaborative approach would be the future road.
